Martirosyan defeats Ouma
In a good action bout, unbeaten super welterweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (27-0, 17 KOs) won a ten round unanimous decision over former world champion Kassim Ouma (26-7, 18 KOs) on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas. It was Martirosyan’s best performance to date as he sharply landed flush shots against the ever advancing Ouma in every round. Ouma scored a flash knockdown in round nine, and picked up the pace after round six, but it was too little too late. Martirosyan prevailed by scores of 97-92, 97-93, 97-93 to retain his NABF/NABO belts. The bout headlined the debut telecast of the new “Top Rank LIVE” boxing series seen on Fox Sports Net/Fox Sports Espanol.

USA Olympian Vanes Martirosyan (26-0, 17 KOs) scored an impressive third round KO over Willie Lee (17-6, 10 KOs) to claim the NABF/NABO super welterweight belts. Martirosyan dropped Lee twice before it was stopped at the 2:13 mark. “I rushed myself during the first round, sort of took off in second and Freddie (Roach) told me to get more busy – to crank it up. That’s what I did,” said Vanes afterward. Trainer Freddie Roach added, “Vanes is ready for a world title shot. He’s 26-0, done his homework, he is ready for the big fight.”
At the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio, junior middleweight prospect Vanes Martirosyan (26-0, 17KOs) stopped Willie Lee (17-6, 11KOs) in three rounds to win the NABF 154-pound title.
Vanes came out fast in the first round. He was winging left hooks and stayed behind the jab. A big right hand had Lee in very serious trouble. Lee tried fighting fire with fire by staying toe to toe with Vanes. Vanes continued to batter him combinations but couldn't put him away. Vanes came out with big right at the start of the second.

Lee cleared his head and fired back with combinations. Lee was coming forward with a jab in the third. Vanes was giving him angles and landing in spurts. As Lee lunged in, he was decked with a massive hook that sent him down until the count of eight. Time was called as Lee's mouthpiece was knocked out.
After the mouthpiece was placed back in, Vanes jumped on him with combinations to send him down again and the fight was stopped. |

Unbeaten in the Bronx
Boxing: Vanes Martirosyan defends titles, unbeaten mark at first-ever boxing event at new Yankee Stadium.

GLENDALE — Vanes "Nightmare" Martirosyan made another point in his case to be considered a top contender in the 154-pound division with his win via 10-round unanimous decision over fellow undefeated prospect "Mean" Joe Greene in the Bronx, New York on Saturday night.
He also made a bit of history, as well, as his North American Boxing Federation and North American Boxing Organization super welterweight title defense was part of the first boxing card to take place in the new Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009. The last of myriad classic boxing exhibitions held at the former Yankee Stadium, which closed in 2008, was a bout between Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton on Sept. 28, 1976. |

Martirosyan manages to get past Greene

NEW YORK -- It wasn't pretty, but Vanes Martirosyan got the job done, outpointing Queens' Joe Greene in a sloppy junior middleweight fight.
The fight on Saturday night was the co-feature on the Yuri Foreman-Miguel Cotto undercard at Yankee Stadium and didn't exactly rev up the crowd for the main event. |

Olympic trial: Martirosyan elevates toward the Andres

"It’s not often that you’ll find an excuse to tie the Spinks brothers in with the Blues brothers. But here goes: By some odd coincidence, the quality of the United States Olympic boxing teams over the last 34 years has run almost perfectly parallel with the quality of the Saturday Night Live casts." |

Martirosyan defeats Greene by unanimous decision

NEW YORK -- Vanes Martirosyan was never destined to look particularly good against Joe Greene, a quick, elusive fighter with a solid amateur background.
Still, the former U.S. Olympian from California was in control of the fight from the early rounds and won a 10-round unanimous decision on the Yuri Foreman-Miguel Cotto undercard Saturday at Yankee Stadium. |

'Nightmare' in New York City

GLENDALE — Vanes "Nightmare" Martirosyan and "Mean" Joe Greene hail from opposite coasts, but hardly come from different worlds and the two undefeated junior middleweight contenders, both 24, have a lot more in common than meets the eye.
Martirosyan, who fights out of Glendale by way of Yerevan, Armenia, and Greene, a Brooklyn, N.Y. native who fights out of Jamaica, Queens, carved out identical paths toward promising professional careers by shooting up through the amateur ranks and faring well in the same United States Olympic trials in 2004. |
